Windows Malware Triage and Removal Decisions
Decide what you are dealing with, how far it has persisted, and whether removal is realistic or the machine should be rebuilt.
Removal advice is only safe once you know what kind of compromise you have. A hijacked browser, adware bundled with an installer, spyware collecting data and a rootkit with system-level persistence all look alike from the desktop, but they differ completely in what a clean-up has to reach and in how confident you can be afterwards. This guide covers triage first, removal second, and the point at which rebuilding is the honest answer.
Work through these questions first
- 1Is the symptom confined to the browser, or present system-wide?
- 2Has it survived a restart, and where is it persisting from?
- 3Is data exposure likely, and do credentials need rotating?
- 4Can this be cleaned with confidence, or does the machine need rebuilding?
